Particular

Annie D.

Having written and edited for both national and international publications during and post completion of my first-class English literature degrees at the University of Manchester, I have experience across a range of writing capacities, as well as a genuine passion for literature. Throughout my educational career I have organised and participated in a number of charity events and conferences as well as independent projects. These undertakings have not only improved my public speaking and communications skills, but also my time management and ability to juggle and prioritise tasks. Through these opportunities I have also gained invaluable experience working independently and as part of a team in order to think innovatively and ensure that deadlines are met, whilst maintaining a happy work environment in which I have fostered strong, lasting relationships with peers.

Experiencia y habilidades

My relevant work experience includes:

May 2023 - November 2023
Most recently, I undertook a six month Editorial Assistant internship at Reader’s Digest. This role consisted of editing articles taken from Reader’s Digest books and PR copy according to online house style and maximising SEO using a range of CMS, including Silkstream, Wordpress and Apple News. I also wrote a variety of different listicles and affiliate articles and had the opportunity to write about my own interests and carry out a number of interviews.

June 2022 - November 2022
I was a freelance writer for The Euro Weekly News which involved a mixture of breaking news and organic writing (including in translation). I also monitored and updated the site’s social media.

September 2020 - Jan 2021 and November 2023 - Present
I worked as an English tutor during my 2nd year of university, helping a student revise for her 11+ exam and SATs. This involved a zoom call for an hour a week where we’d practise exercises which would be on the test, as well as general English grammar and short story writing. Since November 2023, I’ve been tutoring the same student for her year 9 English, to help her gain a better understanding of themes, structure and literary devices in the curriculum texts in order to better prepare her for her GCSEs.

March 2019 - September 2019
I worked as a temp at Peacocks Medical Group, dealing with suppliers and customers personally (via phone calls) to track orders and deliveries and deal with complaints. I also helped with odd tasks such as data input or searching for a specific item in the warehouse. This job taught me transferable skills such as professional liaising, customer service, and building lasting relationships with colleagues.

September 2018 - March 2019
I taught English in a primary school in Spain (Catalonia). This involved lesson planning and teaching in small groups, so I’m comfortable organising and carrying out activities for a range of age groups and abilities. This boosted my confidence speaking in front of others (both professionally and socially) and in my ability to adapt tasks to different skill sets to meet everyone’s abilities.
I also offered private one-on-one English tutoring. It was lovely building relationships with regular students and seeing their language skills improve while they enjoyed the activities I’d planned. During this time I also lived with a host family so I am accustomed to integrating myself into new situations and adapting to new routines.

In addition to this experience, I've also been writing freelance for several years, and have kept up my own blog called 'Avoiding an Annieyurism' since 2019. I'm eager to pursue more writing, editing and translating opportunities - hopefully in Spain or in Spanish if possible - following the completion of my postgraduate degree in English Literature in September 2024.
